Executive Team
Hemant H. Shah,
President & CEO
Hemant Shah is co-founder, president & chief executive office of RMS and
is chairman of RMS' Japanese Joint Venture–OYO RMS. During his 15 years
at RMS, he has played a central role in the changes that have taken
place within the re/insurance industry through its adoption of
technologies and risk-based strategies to manage catastrophe exposure.
Mr. Shah has been recognized as a "Leader of the Future" by Global
Reinsurance; one of "35 Rising Stars" by Business Insurance; a "Model
Citizen" by Risk & Insurance; and in 2005 was surveyed to be amongst the
“100 Insurance Industry Most Powerful – North America” by the Insurance
Newscast. He serves as a Trustee to the Board of the University
Corporation of Atmospheric Research (UCAR), located in Boulder,
Colorado. UCAR manages the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR),
the focal point of U.S. government-sponsored research for understanding
the behavior of the atmosphere and related systems of the global
environment. He also serves on the Board of Overseers of St. John’s
School of Risk Management and Actuarial Science (College of Insurance),
is a Director of the RAND Center for the Study of Terrorism and
Political Violence, a Director on the Board of RAND’s Institute for
Civil Justice, and a Director of the Singapore-based Institute for
Defense and Strategic Studies. Mr. Shah received a BS in Civil
Engineering and an MS in Engineering Management from Stanford
University.
Robert S. Bentley,
COO
Rob joined RMS as its first chief operating officer in May, 2007. As
RMS' COO, Rob is responsible for all operational aspects of RMS and
oversees RMS’ execution of a multi-market, multi-business, and
multi-platform strategy. Rob began his career at Guy Carpenter &
Company, LLC, in 1987 as a property broker. In 1993, he moved to Aon Re,
where he managed a team of property brokers placing national account
property risk, catastrophe, and retrocessional business. He returned to
Guy Carpenter in 1996 as a founding member of the company’s Property
Specialty. In 2002, he was chosen for the role of Western Region
Manager, and then assumed the position of Global COO in 2006. Rob holds
a BA in Philosophy from the University of Virginia, and also attended
the Stanford Executive Program at Stanford University.
Stephen I. Robertson,
CFO & Group Executive, Enterprise Services
Steve Robertson is executive vice president and chief financial officer,
and serves as a Director of OYO RMS, RMS' Japanese joint venture. Prior
to joining RMS in 2001, Mr. Robertson was CFO of COLO.com, and CFO of
Insweb, the online insurance marketplace, where he helped raise
significant private equity capital and managed the company's successful
initial public offering. Before this, he spent a number of years in the
insurance investment banking business, raising capital and executing
mergers and acquisitions for Lehman Brothers, Salomon Smith Barney, and
Alex. Brown & Sons. Mr. Robertson holds an AB from Princeton
University and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Robert Muir-Wood, Chief Research Officer
Dr.
Robert Muir-Wood joined RMS in 1996, and in 2003 was appointed chief research
officer, leading a research organization comprised of highly experienced
RMS professionals pursuing research to extend the utility and application
of probabilistic modeling. Dr. Muir-Wood has led projects to develop
earthquake, tropical cyclone, windstorm, and storm surge models in the
U.S., Japan,
Australia, Europe, and the Caribbean and has been the technical lead on
a number of catastrophe risk securitizations. He has written numerous
articles in journals and magazines, run courses in catastrophe risk for
Lloyds of London, and has published six books.
Paul VanderMarck,
Executive Vice President, Products
Paul VanderMarck is executive vice president of products and leads the
teams responsible for model development and product management. He has
been with RMS since 1992 in a variety of roles ranging from new product
development to global expansion of RMS' client base. In 2003, Paul was
recognized for his contributions to the field of earthquake risk
mitigation and management with the Earthquake Engineering Research
Institute's Shah Family Innovation Award. Paul received a BS in Civil
Engineering and an MS in Structural and Earthquake Engineering, both
from Stanford University.
Peter Nakada, Managing Director, RMS Consulting
Peter Nakada, managing director and senior vice president of RMS
Consulting, is responsible for business development and client service
delivery for the consulting business. Prior to joining RMS, Peter
co-founded ERisk, where he played various roles including head of R&D
and consulting. Before that, he was a director in Oliver, Wyman &
Company's Risk Management and Insurance practices. His experience
includes enterprise risk and capital management, shareholder value
optimization, asset/liability management, and active portfolio
management with property & casualty insurers, life insurers, and banks
in North America, Europe, and the emerging markets. Peter has authored
many articles on risk and is a frequent conference speaker. Peter has a
BA in Engineering Sciences from Harvard College, an MS in Engineering
Management from Stanford University and is a Chartered Financial
Analyst.
Lori Sherer,
Senior Vice President, Risk Assessment Initiatives
Lori A. Sherer joined RMS in 2006 after having served as an officer of,
and the vice president and general manager of the enterprise decision
management business unit at Fair Isaac. In that capacity, she had P&L
responsibility for the software and analytic assets of the company, and
was successful bringing new decision science applications to market for
the financial services & consumer credit industries. At RMS, Lori brings
her experience to the insurance arena, initially serving as the head of
corporate strategy and currently serving as senior vice president of the
risk assessment initiatives group. In this role she is responsible for
the commercial success of investments in new RMS models and analytic
applications for outside of the core catastrophe risk modeling agenda.
Her previous work experience also includes 10 years in general
management consulting, including acting as partner with Mitchell Madison
Group, LLC, and with Mercer Management Consulting. Lori holds a BA summa
cum laude from New England College, Henniker NH, and an MBA from Babson
Graduate School of Business, Wellesley, MA.
Matthew Grant,
Group Executive, Global Client Development
Matthew is responsible for RMS' worldwide relationship management,
sales, professional services, and product support activities, as well as
the company’s marketing activities, including overseeing the development
of new markets for RMS. Matthew was previously responsible for RMS’
international businesses, having founded the European office for RMS in
1996, and has been a leading advocate for the use of catastrophe
modeling and risk assessment within the (re)insurance market since 1992.
Prior to joining RMS, Matthew was involved in risk assessment and
emergency planning for
the nuclear, chemical, and offshore industries. Matthew has a degree in
Mechanical Engineering.
Marian Szefler,
Senior Vice President, Application Development
Marian Szefler is senior vice president of application development with
overall responsibility for the financial modeling, software development,
and QA departments. He has over 30 years of international experience in
software development and IT operations. Prior to joining RMS, Mr.
Szefler spent eight years at Oracle Corporation in a variety of
executive roles, including vice president of Oracle On Demand where his
responsibilities included strategy, service definition, business and IT
delivery models creation, software tools development, and converting
Oracle Applications and Technology into the SaaS model. Mr. Szefler was
also vice president of applications development and was responsible for
the definition and development of multiple products including Oracle’s
CRM (Customer Relation Management) and supply chain suite for the
consumer packaged goods market. He also has extensive experience in
professional services; software standards; project management and
business development. Mr. Szefler holds an M.S. in Electrical
Engineering from Gdansk Polytechnic University, Poland.
Ajay Lavakare,
Senior Vice President, RMS Data Solutions, and Chairman, RMSI
Ajay Lavakare joined RMS as senior vice president, from its subsidiary in India, RMSI, to launch a new business initiative, RMS Data Solutions. RMS Data
Solutions will develop and deliver a range of products and services to
assist clients in capturing, validating, and managing high resolution
data about their exposures. Ajay is also the chairman of RMSI, which he
founded as a joint venture with RMS in 1992. Ajay has a Bachelors in
Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, India,
and a Masters in Civil Engineering in Structural Engineering from
Stanford University.
