January 31, 2008 United States Geological Survey Earthquake Seminar Series, Menlo Park, CA

Dr. Hesaam Aslani gave a talk on the "Role of Structural Engineering in Probabilistic Loss Estimation for Natural Catastrophes."

 

February 6-9, 2008 2008 Earthquake Engineering Research Institute Annual Meeting: Hurricane Katrina - Lessons for Earthquake Risk Reduction

On February 9, structural engineer and earthquake risk consultant Kate Stillwell spoke in lieu of RMS' Dr. Patricia Grossi on the "Consequences of Cascading Catastrophic Events" in the session "Dealing with Low-Probability/High-Consequence Events: What Recent Catastrophes are Teaching Us."

 

February 7-8, 2008 The ILS Today European Insurance Linked Securities and Cat Bond Summit 2008, London

On February 8, Peter Nakada spoke on "A New Parametric Industry Loss Index for European Windstorm" and participated in a panel discussion with AIR & EQECAT representatives on "Advancing the Art of Risk Modeling."

 

February 14, 2008 Department of Earth Sciences, University of Bristol, England

Dr. Gordon Woo gave a talk on probabilistic volcanic eruption forecasting and the call for evacuation.

 

February 21-22, 2008 Hurricane Risk Mitigation Leadership Forum

On February 21, chief products officer Paul VanderMarck participated in the panel, "Making Mitigation Work, the Modeling Perspective."

 

March 18-19, 2008 SIFMA Insurance and Risk Linked Securities Conference, New York

On March 19, Dr. Katie Coughlin, senior catastrophe risk modeler, participated on the panel "Hurricane Forecasting: A Discussion of Recent Developments and Implications for the 2008 Hurricane Season." Also on March 19, Peter Nakada, managing director of RMS Consulting,  participated on the panel "Developments in Indemnity and Non-Indemnity Structures."

 

June 11-12, 2008 Catastrophe Modeling Forum: Changing Climatic Dynamics and Catastrophe Model Projections, New York

Dr. Shree Khare and Dr. Nicola Patmore participated with other leading climatologists and modelers in a forum hosted by the Insurance Institute of America discussing the impacts of climate change on catastrophe modeling.

 

June 24-25, 2008 Annual Meeting 2008: The Human Face of Climate Change, Geneva

On June 25, Dr. Celine Herweijer, principal scientist of future climate, will be part of a round table discussion on "Coastal Cities in the Global South: Waiting for the Next Mega-Disaster."
